GRP fibreglass roofing in Stoke-on-Trent

A seamless, hard-wearing finish with no joints to fail.

Fibreglass roofing, or GRP, is the system we recommend when a flat roof needs to be watertight and stay that way. Glass reinforced plastic is laid wet onto the deck and cures into a single seamless skin, bonded to the boards beneath. No joints, no laps, nothing for water to find. Abbotts Flat Roofing installs GRP across Staffordshire, backed by over 15 years in the trade.

A GRP flat roof does more than keep the rain out. Once cured it is hard enough to take regular foot traffic, which makes it the right choice for balconies, terraces and walkways as well as standard flat roofs. Preformed edge trims give crisp lines around the perimeter, and the topcoat comes in a choice of colours, so the finished roof looks as sharp as it performs.

We fit GRP fibreglass roofing on homes and commercial buildings alike: garages, extensions, dormers, porches and garden rooms, plus shops, offices, industrial units and schools. Whether it is a small porch roof or a large commercial deck, every job starts with a free, no-obligation written quote. How fibreglass roofing works and where it fits best

GRP stands for glass reinforced plastic. We lay resin onto a clean, dry deck, bed glass fibre matting into it, then wet the matting out with more resin. As it cures, resin and glass bond into one continuous laminate across the whole roof, sealed at every edge with preformed trims. There are no joints or laps anywhere, which is exactly where most other flat roofs fail.

That seamless finish is why GRP roofing suits complicated roofs. Rooflights, lanterns, kerbs, chimneys and parapets are dressed in properly rather than patched around. We have finished GRP roofs with glass lanterns set into them, run tidy topcoat detailing around rooflight kerbs, and taken the laminate up and over chimneys and parapet walls. If your roof has awkward upstands, a fibreglass flat roof handles them cleanly.

What a proper GRP installation involves

Preparation decides how long a GRP roof lasts. GRP needs a sound, dry, stable deck to bond to, so we strip the old covering and board the roof properly before any resin goes down. Laying over a damp or tired deck is how bad installs happen. With the base right, we fix the preformed edge trims and laminate the main area in resin and matting.

Once the laminate has cured we apply the topcoat, which seals the surface and gives the roof its colour. This is where detailing matters: tidy lines around rooflight kerbs, clean corners on the trims, full coverage on every upstand. GRP needs a dry day to cure properly, so we plan installs around the forecast. Done right, you get one solid skin with nothing for water to get behind.

Repairs, lifespan and when to replace

A well laid GRP flat roof should give decades of service with minimal maintenance. When problems show, they are easy to spot: cracking or crazing in the topcoat, pinholes, or laminate lifting where the original deck was poor. Small defects can often be sorted with a fibreglass roof repair: grind back the affected area, re-laminate, then blend fresh topcoat across the patch.

If the failure runs deeper, widespread cracking, a spongy deck underfoot or damp showing inside, a repair is throwing money at a roof that needs replacing. We will give you a straight answer, because patching a failed deck helps nobody. Abbotts Flat Roofing covers Staffordshire as well as Cheshire and Derbyshire, and GRP is one of six flat roofing systems we install, so the advice is about the right fix for your building.

GRP Fibreglass Roofing questions, answered

How long does fibreglass roofing last?

A properly installed fibreglass roofing system should last decades and typically outlives felt by a wide margin. The key word is properly: GRP laid on a sound, dry deck in the right conditions cures into a single laminate with no seams to open up. Most premature failures we see come down to poor preparation, not the material.

What affects the cost of a fibreglass roof?

Fibreglass roof cost comes down to size, access and detail. A simple garage roof is quicker than a terrace with a lantern, rooflight kerbs and parapet walls to dress. The condition of the existing deck matters too, since re-boarding adds work. We give a free, no-obligation written quote for every job, so you know the full price before we start.

Can you walk on a GRP roof?

Yes. Once cured, GRP is hard enough to take regular foot traffic, which is why we use it for balconies, terraces and walkways as well as standard roofs. If the area will be walked on every day, tell us at quote stage and we will spec the build-up and topcoat to suit. Felt and rubber membranes cannot match it on this.

Can a damaged fibreglass roof be repaired, or does it need replacing?

It depends what has failed. Cracked or crazed topcoat and small splits in the laminate can usually be repaired: we grind back the damage, re-laminate and blend in fresh topcoat. If the deck underneath has gone soft or the laminate is lifting across large areas, replacement is the better spend. We look at roofs like this every week and give you an honest answer either way.
